Hair today, gone tomorrow. No, seriously. Gone.
March 25, 2008When I was in the second grade, I wanted either really long hair or a buzz cut.
My mother, wise woman that she is, absolutely forbade the latter.
That’s when I started growing my hair out. And, since I had a fringe at the time and was growing that out too, it’s when I started wearing headbands.
Last year, over spring break, I cut off two feet of that hair for a good cause. This year, with very little left to lose, I decided it was about time to get that buzz cut.
So. Pictures!
The two on the left are from right before the cut. (My hair grew out quite a bit since last year; it’s not nearly as cute as it had been.)
My grandmother (who, if Mom asks, had nothing to do with this) didn’t just chop it off indiscriminately, but styled it as she cut. So on the top right is how it looked a quarter of the way through the process.
The bottom right is halfway through. The first time I saw the picture, I thought, “Whoa, it’s Chris!” I never realized before how much I actually look like my younger brother.
Three quarters of the way through, the result was so embarrassingly punk that I decided not to save a photo.

Directly after the cut: my clothes are still covered with hair, and so is the floor.
At first, I didn’t really care for the look. But it’s grown out noticeably within the past week, and I like it much better now.

I’m not sure how obvious the difference is from the photos, but it’s very clear to me, especially to the touch. The initial straight-up fuzziness is gone.
I’m sort of surprised by how many people have said they like it, especially since I don’t remember nearly as much appreciation for my last major haircut. (Maybe it’s more evident that I’m insecure about it?)
But (apologies for the blinding obviousness of this pun) it’s growing on me. I like last year’s cut better, and I doubt I’ll do this again; on the other hand, I’m glad I did it, and it’s kind of cute, isn’t it?
I’m still going to wear a lot of hats, though. Spring is taking its time in arriving, and my head gets a whole lot colder now.

Nice! I had a few female friends who sported that haircut – it looks quite fetching. One trick: let it grow a little in the front and apply gel to the bangs and you get a “flippy.”
You’re lucky you have a face shape that supports it. I tried cutting my hair similarly and the results were nowhere near as positive. ^_^;
When will we see the new avatar art with the new do? Also, does this mean you’ll be cosplay Haruka, now?
Oh, definitely cute! I quite like the in-between shots, too.
Cheers to your trying something new!
I know I’m not really the intended audience (to put it mildly), but I’ve still got to say: the cut in upper right frame – short but not too short – looks amazing on you!
For the moment I’m going to leave my avatars the same. I don’t feel like drawing new ones every couple of months as my hair grows.
But I’m glad the in-between cuts go over well! That’ll help me settle on something when I get tired of experimenting (which will probably happen soon).
I wish I had the balls to do this, no lie. I’ve wanted to for a while, but between parental units/family members BAAAAAAAW-ing every time I cut my hair shorter (omfg Val I love your hair wah why do you do dis etc.) and the fact that my summer jobs probably wouldn’t be so into it, I haven’t.
I think it looks cool. I need a cut, since mine’s getting a little too close to mullety for my comfort again.
