(Subject line is from Robert Frost.)

A meme:
1. Your name/username.
2. Left-handed or right-handed?
3. Favourite letters to write?
4. Least favourite letters to write?
5. Write “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.”
6. Tag 6 people.

Of the top six stories on Yahoo, four are about Sarah Palin; the fifth was about the Obama camp’s reaction to Sarah Palin; and the last one was comparing Obama to Sarah Palin. The McCain camp has wrapped the news cycle around its little finger. It’s impressive.

Speaking as a moderate who is still sold on the Obama-Biden ticket, there’s a lot to appreciate about Sarah Palin, on top of the fact that she brings let’s-break-a-glass-ceiling mojo to Old Man McWhiteguy’s ticket. Here, have some thoughtful analysis.

According to Young King Ours, the Hellsing manga is about to end.

I’m torn. I do want to see the series finish (not because I’m tired of it, of course, but because the alternative—in which it jumps the shark and limps on, worn-out and tired, for decades— is worse). On the other hand, it doesn’t seem like there’ll be enough time to wrap up all the loose ends Hirano has left, even with more of The Dawn still to come.

That said: readers of Shine, prepare yourselves for Plot.

(Props to Eric Hoffer for the subject line.)

I’ve been listening to the Left Behind books recently. (I’ll get on my pro-audiobook soapbox some other time. For the moment, just roll with the fact that I like them. These particular audiobooks are also downloadable online through My Local LibraryTM, meaning they’re free and available everywhere. This is a perk.)

If you haven’t heard of Left Behind, here’s a quick summary of the series: The Rapture happens. Our Heroes (a few traumatized yet plucky survivors) realize it was Jesus, become born-again, and try to convert as many others as possible before the Antichrist or one of God’s upcoming judgments gets ‘em first.

Here’s another summary: Fundamentalist preacher and ghostwriter team up to write Mary Sue Bible fanfiction, working from a pretty skewed interpretation of the canon in the first place.

I know the subject line is a fact: my new 2008-09 school planner tells me so.

Which is to say that I have safely arrived at school, gotten myself hooked up to the Internet, and not missed any classes yet. (Classes haven’t actually started yet, so missing them would be quite a feat, but I’m sure I could manage it somehow.)

Safely arrived with me is Sarah Jane, my new external HD. She represents a break with my previous trend of naming appliances after Red Dwarf characters: my last HD was Kochanski; my first laptop was Lister, which imploded and was replaced by Camille.

Naturally, this happens right at the time that we learn a new Dwarf special is in the works. (Scroll down half a dozen points; squee accordingly.)

(Apologies to Woody Allen.)

Two articles that pair off nicely: Local Idiot To Post Comment On Internet, meet Complaining Bloggers Have a Cable Company’s Ear.

The gist of the second one is that if you post something negative about Comcast online, Comcast will track it down, use the criticism to improve its products, and send you an email thanking you for the help. Some bloggers are feeling a little creeped out about this, which I find very amusing. That’s right, folks: when you make a public post on the Internet, everyone can see it! Even the people you’re writing about! Shocking, huh?

(By the way, if anyone from Comcast’s digital relations department stumbles on this post: don’t worry about the haters, guys. Keep up the good work.)

In random amusing news, Martha Stewart is presiding over her own MSTing.

In random thought-provocation, here’s an essay on being mixed-race in America. On that note, you may as well also check out everything posted for International Blog Against Racism Week.

And in conclusion: Orson Scott Card, I love your books. So whyyyyy must you be a crazy homophobe?

The NYT magazine has a huge article about trolling. It goes pretty in-depth, so even if you don’t need to be introduced to 4chan, it’s worth a read.

On a brighter note, the U.S. State Department now has its own wiki. And by all accounts, it’s working pretty well.

Speaking of wikis, this is all kinds of hilarious: Wikihistory.

And speaking of hilarious . . . okay, Embrace the Horror starts out parodic (H. P. Lovecraft meets the Flying Spaghetti Monster), but it gets viciously deterministic by the end.

If you need a pick-me-up after that, the Onion is happy to oblige: Al Gore Places Infant Son In Rocket To Escape Dying Planet.

And, to close on what may be the warmest and fuzziest note possible: 15 reasons Mr. Rogers was best neighbor ever. Seriously, this is amazing. It will restore your faith in humanity.
