Aaaand~

August 31, 2009

Back at school, and tired already. That probably doesn’t bode well.

By the way, I’m resolved to actually keep up with Facebook this year. Those of you who have accounts (and know me well enough to know my RL name – I’m trying to keep some distance between FB and fandom), if you haven’t added me yet, now’s the time.

C, E-flat and G go into a bar…

August 31, 2009

You can see the floor of my room again!

Cleaning spree is finished (for the moment, anyway). Of course, it also doesn’t hurt that I’m driving a carload of stuff up to university today.

One more year to go. I suppose I should be saying something inspirational about how this is going to be the best year ever, but really, I’m kind of ready to be done. So have a slightly-over-my-head joke instead.

C, E-flat and G go into a bar. The bartender says, “sorry, but we don’t serve minors.” So E-flat leaves, and C and G have an open fifth between them. After a few drinks, the fifth is diminished and G is out flat. F comes in and tries to augment the situation, but is not sharp enough.

D comes in and heads for the bathroom saying, “Excuse me. I’ll just be a second.” Then A comes in, but the bartender is not convinced that this relative of C is not a minor. Then the bartender notices B-flat hiding at the end of the bar and says, “Get out! You’re the seventh minor I’ve found in this bar tonight.”

E-Flat comes back the next night in a three-piece suit with nicely shined shoes. The bartender says, “you’re looking sharp tonight. Come on in, this could be a major development.” Sure enough, E-flat soon takes off his suit and everything else, and is au natural.

Eventually C sobers up and realizes in horror that he’s under a rest. C is brought to trial, found guilty of contributing to the diminution of a minor, and is sentenced to 10 years of D.S. without Coda at an upscale correctional facility.

he still plays with Legos, though

August 29, 2009

You know, my mental “line” for shipping and/or smut with underage characters used to be “if they’re younger than my little brother, it’s squicky.”

Said little brother just left for his first year of college this morning.

I’m gonna have to come up with a new standard one of these days, aren’t I.

And beyond the beyond, go

August 28, 2009

Marvelous, marvelous song. Have I recommended The Guild to y’all yet? It’s a webseries about a group of MMOers, and it’s hysterical (and so very, very true).

Another fun video: That’s Gay – Commercials, tracking the undercover queer-friendly messages in some commercials. Subtle HRC logo on a guy’s shirt FTW.

Newport wants to save one of the UK’s last remaining police boxes. (Love the Fourth Doctor-style scarf painted on it.)

Political satire went more mainstream than ever during the Bush years, but comedians are still having a hard time with Obama.

Sustainable city in Sweden disposes of its garbage via pneumatic tube. I can feel John Hodgman’s approval from here.

A website for Third Culture Kids – people who grew up between worlds. Full of interesting, if often heartbreaking, stories. (Thanks to Xuanwu for sending me the link.)

Did I mention

August 26, 2009

that there were baby ducks at the shore?

Ducks standing on the crab cage (it’s low tide, obviously, or there would be a couple feet of water in between them):

Unexpected glee is unexpected

Reason #2501845 I love Dreamwidth: OpenID users can join communities. So if there are locked posts, or if the comm is set to “only members can comment”, you still don’t need an actual DW account to have a way in.

Reason #2501846 I love DW: It’s good for LJ. (Link includes a whole history of online journaling services. Inside views and all.)

§

Just recently started listening to Pandora again. Had forgotten how much I love it.

The premise: you tell the program some music you like, and it goes out and finds similar-sounding songs to play for you. If you’re a music junkie, it’s addictive. And it’s added a ton of background info since I was last there, including lyrics, artist histories, and album reviews.

So a song by H.I.M. comes up on one of these stations (this one, which is how I got introduced to Plumb, Delain, Fireflight, and Leaves’ Eyes), and I click through to their artist page, and what do I see?

On the move again

August 19, 2009

Heading off to spend a few days with Mom’s parents, and I’ll be offline for the duration.

And I mean seriously offline, none of this pansy “dropping by the library every day to check my email” stuff. Roughing it! Living on the edge! (For those values of “living on the edge” that include having Grandma cook for you.)

See y’all on the flip side.

I’ve got a pantomime horse disguise you can use.

Map of Europe with south facing up. Trippy.

Using the blogosphere to measure global happiness. I feel good about this. (There, I’ve done my part for the day.)

I Can Has Cheezburger: The MusicLOL. I cannot imagine this will be any good, but…

How long Bill Murray spend trapped in the time loop in Groundhog Day? Years and years, it turns out. (Gives me chills.)

ASCII cross-stitch sampler. Want.
