Not in our town, you don’t. April 1, 2009

A group of people from Westboro Baptist Church (that’s Fred Phelps’ “God hates gay people”, “let’s picket the funerals of fallen soldiers” hate machine) staged a protest at my brother’s high school on Monday.

The real story, though, is the 250-person counterprotest.

You can see my brother himself in picture #2. (Sort of. He’s the guy behind the car behind the guy behind the pole.) Mom was there too, waving a cape-sized rainbow flag on my behalf.

In short, the good guys have come out on top. I’m only sorry I wasn’t on the continent to join in.

You’d think “Jesus loves everyone” would be a better message than “God hates you”.

With respect to the counterprotests, that is.

Yeah, so would I. (I won’t claim to be thrilled about those particular signs :\)

That’s awesome.

And as for the “God hates you” signs…it’s the WBC. They’re not going to be reasoned with. Might as well fight fire with fire.

And honestly, they’re such despicable people it’s hard for me to care.

Geez, those Westboro Baptist folks have something wrong in the head. What’s weird is when they’re interviewed, they’re always *smiling*, even when they say, “You’re all going to burn in Hell.”

My favorite counter-protest is when the motorcycle guys drown them out by revving their engines. They do that at military funerals. It’s like countering bigotry with the roar of awesome.

“Countering bigotry with the roar of awesome”. FTW.

A huge protest just because of a GSA? Really? Sometime I forget how lucky we have it up here in…um, Alaska. That’s odd.

*squints* … Yeah, I can see your brother.

But have you seen document about that group? (Made by BBC, who else?)
