Madoka Magica: first dub episode liveblog! February 11, 2012

Got a NicoNico account this afternoon, and jumped right in to the livestreaming as soon as it opened (half an hour before the show began, just to give us all time to warm up). There’s a sidebar for the last few hundred comments (25 minutes to go, visitor count is 7,777), and so far it’s a grand mix of PMMM spoilers, not-quite-related spoilers (Joan of Arc dies! Snape kills Dumbledore! Darth Vader is Luke’s father!), pervy comments, MLP references, crossovers, 4chan memes, shipfights, and someone capslocking the Pokemon song.

I have iffy feelings about the dub based on the trailer. Too much fake-high-voices. We will see if that holds up as the episode goes on.

Fifteen minutes to go. Visitor count: 8,903.

Ten minutes to go. 10,819. “Would you give your laifu for your waifu?” / earnest debate over whether Homura is Anthy or Utena / now there’s Rickrolling / someone keeps C&Ping “GIRLS CAN’T LOVE GIRLS” / “DO NOT THROW SOULS” / someone says this is the Director’s Cut, will have to see if I can spot it / “Spoiler: Jesus is a magical girl.”

Screenshot just to give you an idea of how it looks.

Eight minutes to go. 11,852. “WHEN YOU DIE IN THE SOUL GEM YOU DIE IN REAL LIFE.” / someone advertising for some game, ugh / Homestuck references / people from Gaia, Tumblr, 4chan, and Reddit seeking each other out (not that it’s going to work given the spdeed of the comments…)

Four minutes, 14,325. “GIRLS CANT LOVE BOYS” / “screw the rules I have green hair!”

Two minutes, 15,180.

Seconds. 15,866.

We’re getting an intro from the voices of Homura, Madoka, and Kyuubei. Homura: “Don’t sign the contract!” Too cute.

Madoka doesn’t sound fake-squeaky so far…although of course all we’ve heard is her gasping while running.

“WHY DOES KYUUBEY SOUND LIKE A SHOTA” = yeah, I can’t help but agree with that. Also “QB HAS TOO MUCH EMOTION.”

Yeah, okay, now that we’ve heard actual conversation, Madoka is fake-squeaky. Sighhhh.

Theme song! Visitors: 23,967.

The dad’s voice is decent. As is Tatsuya’s, d’awww.

Talking with Mom, Madoka sounds a little better. Junko sounds cute.

“THE MAKEUP ALL DIES” = *sporfle*

“PICK THE RED, HOE” = I feel bad, but I laughed.

I still love how Madoka and Junko say goodbye with high-fives.

First impression: Hitomi sounds indistinguishable from Madoka. Sayaka sounds all right.

Second impression: Sayaka’s voice is totally my favorite so far.

Kazuko also sounds too high, like a teenager rather than an adult, but she definitely has the pointer-snapping anger down.

Liking Homura’s voice too. Calm and elegant.

“OH MISS HOMURA, A FANFICTION” – has someone drawn this yet? If not, why not?

Mmmmmmmmm, Homura’s fangirls flirting with her.

Okay, Madoka’s voice is kind of all over the place. There’s some good moments in the hallway walk.

Surprise Kyuubei blink! (During the gym montage.) Never even noticed that before.

Sayaka: “That’s so moe it makes me sick!” N’aww. Hitomi sounds all right. Sayaka’s voice is so perfect.

They’re being good with the names, by the way. MAdoka, HOmula.

“run pikachu run!” / “kill the cabbit!” (during the shooting-Kyuubei scene.)

“wild coobie appeared” / “THROW A POKEBALL MADOKA” / “A WILD HOMURA APPEARS”

“we borrowed these chains from the portrait of petite cosette” lollllll. (I remember nothing about the plot of that series, just the atmosphere.)

They redubbed the Anthonies. Not sure why. No complaints about their voices, though.

First impression: Mami sounds cuuuuute.

Mami: “Maybe I should introduce myself. Actually…it’s going to have to wait a bit.” Perfect delivery.

“KEEP YOUR HEAD COOL, MAMI” / “HER HEAD IS SCREWED ON RIGHT” / “better quit while you’re ahead” / “she’s got a good head on her shoulders” / “Head puns, ACTIVATE!” / “mami is ahead of all the other magical girls” / “don’t get ahead of yourself, mami” / “TIME TO HEAD OUT MAMI”

Bad sign: Kyuubei saying “Mami” sounds exactly like “Mommy.” Couldn’t they have tweaked the pronunciation juuuust a little? Enough so it doesn’t sound creepy in English?

And yes, this was the redrawn version. Fakeout ending theme ahoy!

Visitors: 36,406

Post-theme waving from the VAs. Kyuubei’s VA invites us all to make contracts. Heeee.

Visitors: 36,853 (why is it going up *now*?)

Tallies from the vote just gathered from the audience: 78.8% Very Good, 17.0% OK, 1.5% Not Very Good, 2.7% Bad. I voted OK. Had some issues, but nothing to gnash too many teeth over, and I’m looking forward to seeing more.

39,103 – lol, okay, I’m confused.

Comments are at 93,216, and this is where I give up on the mystery of the growing audience and close the window.

(And now to go watch some more Creamy Mami, which is a title that certain livestream commenters would have had a field day with.)

Hey! I got here from AO3, I’m new there but I love your fanworks, so… I kind of followed the links from your page to here. *shyness*

Anyway, I love your work! And this post was hysterical. GIRLS CAN’T LOVE BOYS, indeed. :D

2. Runeless - February 12, 2012

Oops, got that comment wrong… I thought it read girls can’t love boys… which would be funny given this show. Girls can’t love girls? Bullshit! :D

Erin Ptah - February 12, 2012

There was one person in the chat who kept spamming GIRLS CAN’T LOVE GIRLS (I think it’s a meme). So someone finally countered with GIRLS CAN’T LOVE BOYS, which is much more thematically accurate :D

Thanks for the compliment on my fics! I’m glad the blog was easy to find ^_^

Runeless - February 12, 2012

I’m just glad I found someone from AO3. I just joined, and I feel all alone :D I don’t think it has forums… makes it hard to connect! Especially for a new fanwriter like me.

And GIRLS CAN’T LOVE BOYS is so much more thematically accurate. Madoka can be vaguely summarized as “lesbian love saves the universe” without any inaccuracies.

Erin Ptah - February 13, 2012

Heh, you’re not the first person to complain about lack of forums. The people running the site all use Dreamwidth and/or LiveJournal, and so do a lot of of the users, enough that the admins tend to assume everyone can connect that way.

Personally, I get my Madoka Magica fan connection on the following comms:

http://madokamagica.livejournal.com/ (specifically for the series)
http://frillsofjustice.dreamwidth.org/ (for magical girls in general)

And my username is sailorptah on both sites, if you join and want to track me down!

I see nothing unrealistic about that vague summary. *nods*

Runeless - February 13, 2012

Thank you thank you thank you! :D If you have any fanfic beta reading needs, you can absolutely look me up! :D

It’s a shame Aniplex has the series – it’ll cost $150-200 to own the series, as a result. (Better than Fate/Zero, which is $500 for the collection.) So unless you’re rich, it’s fansubs or streaming only.
