For anyone who wants an AO3 invite…

…comment with an email address and I’ll have one sent to you. All the wranglers got a stack of new invites for Christmas, so I have plenty to spare.

(I’d put them directly in this post, but it would suck if they got nabbed by spambots. So, emails it is.)

AO3 Tag Wrangling for Christmas

I’m going through AO3 tags, trying to round up all the freeforms in the wilderness of No Fandom that should be in Christmas Tales & Traditions. Everything from Christmas caroling to Santa pub crawls to ugly holiday sweaters.

As of last night, a search for “christmas” in freeforms turned up 2024 results. Most of which aren’t in Christmas Tales. This could take a while.

On the plus side, in the process I’ve put at least a few dozen 0-use tags in the path of the rake (the daily subroutine that gets rid of such things). So that number should look a smidge less intimidating soon….

So here’s what you missed on the OTW

  • Organization holds elections to fill 2 full-term Board seats
  • There are 6 candidates, which makes thisĀ [eta: almost] the first time they’ve had more candidates than free seats
  • (There were 8 candidates to start with, but the Board disqualified one of them via some hella shady maneuvering, and another dropped out in protest)
  • (There’s also a whole thing with one of the Board members using a sockpuppet to ask questions in an open elections chat)
  • OTW voting membership (a privilege which costs $10, by the way) casts their votes
  • Top 2 candidates get the 2 seats
  • Board goes “oh btw, there’s a partial-term Board seat that also needs to be filled, and instead of appointing the 3rd-place runner-up, we’re going to vote one of the outgoing candidates — who ran for re-election, and came in last — into this spot.”
  • Massive outcry from other people working in the OTW (including the AO3), and from all the people who paid actual money to vote in this thing.
  • Within a few hours (?!?), the entire current Board resigns.

Yowza.

I mean, the fallout from this is gonna be chaotic as all get out, but hoooooopefully to good results? The popular candidates were the ones with reformist agendas anyway, so when the existing Board burns itself to the ground, that leaves a whole lot of clear territory to build up fresh new everything. Even though that’s a much bigger job than the 2 newly-elected candidates (plus whoever gets finagled into the 5 newly-freed seats…I assume the 3 electoral runners-up, and who else?) signed up for.

Fingers crossed that they can turn the OTW into an organization I’d be comfortable giving money to.

Can anybody open this file? The extension is .DCR, and it should be an image, which I believe is animated. (I made it myself, so I know it’s virus-free.) If you can convert the frames into some more universal image format and get them back to me, I will shower you with cookies.

Watched Pleasantville yesterday, while working on go_exchange assignment. This movie, you guys. This movie. Not only is it a visual and technical marvel, the whole thing is clearly a metaphor for fandom. A couple of viewers step into canon, and…okay, the first thing they introduce is porn, with a strong focus on female sexuality. But this is followed by AU, and crossovers, and shipping, and character studies, and all sorts of depths that the original series never explored. I want to buy everybody I know a copy.

Speaking of fandom: my WIP folder no longer has a scrollbar. Pretty soon I’m not going to know what to do with myself.

Picked up an AO3 account, thus silencing forever that nagging voice in the back of my head saying maybe I should make use of my ff.net one to upload things. Currently posted: all my non-fake-news stuff, and a couple of the fake-newsy crossovers. Not planning to post the whole fake-news oeuvre; still mulling over which bits to post, and when.

Shine readers who follow the forum will already know that I’ve had trouble sleeping, and am a bit behind on updates. Still working on it. Will be up to speed soon. Possibly after a nap.

For your entertainment in the meantime: Not My Fandom Fest is, with the possible exception of Pleasantville, the most disarmingly charming thing I’ve seen all week.
