Fun Things To Do Over Your Weekend July 25, 2015

(1) Sign this petition to have the United States recognize the KKK as a domestic terrorism organization. (It is shameful that we haven’t done this already.)

(2) Do a few of these things suggested by the Brady Campaign. They’re fighting the good fight against the US’s gun problem, against a coalition of weapons dealers who are hell-bent on making it easier to sell things.

(3) Pick up the facts about the death of Sandra Bland, who was jailed for three days because she failed to signal a lane change and then found mysteriously dead in her cell. Be horrified. Look for local protests. If you’re in the Massachusetts area, there’s one in Boston this Tuesday.

(4) Read this essay, written from experience, about how medical care is frequently icky and uncomfortable. And don’t let people demonize Planned Parenthood on the grounds that, in the process of providing medical care, they do things that are icky and uncomfortable.

(5) Ask your representative to co-sponsor the Save Oak Flat Act. An eleventh-hour addition to the end of a “must-pass” military spending bill traded 2400 acres of Arizona federal land to a foreign mining corporation — including a sacred site for local Apache tribe members. Because why would the US waste an opportunity to screw over Native Americans for profit?

(6) On a brighter note, celebrate that workplace discrimination based on sexual orientation is officially illegal across the country. Not even because of a new law — but because the EEOC ruled that it falls under the jurisdiction of the 1964 Civil Rights Act! (Because you can’t discriminate based on sex, and we’re finally acknowledging that that’s what’s happening if you’d fire a woman for dating a woman, but wouldn’t fire a man for the same reason.)

(7) All of the above is US-based stuff, so here’s something that’s hopefully doable anywhere: browse the free-to-download section on the Big Finish website, and help yourself to whatever looks good.

New teaser for the next season of Doctor Who…and I’m kinda discouraged.

It was encouraging to see Twelve getting an older-looking body, with a style reminiscent of some of the earlier Doctors. But partly because I was hoping it was a hint that they were going to take a more old-fashioned approach to the writing, too. Ditch the “every season gets a narrower and narrower focus on the Doctor himself and his personal importance” trend along with the “every Doctor gets younger” one.

More aliens and mysteries and diplomatic shenanigans and adventures, please! Less of the Doctor navel-gazing and fretting about whether he is a Good Person. There’s only so much you can do with that, and by this point I assure you it has all been done.

Twelfth Doctor announced!

On the one hand…yeah, it’s another white guy. In spite of the fact that the promo stuff was carefully and visibly gender-neutral, so it’s not like TPTB in general are in denial that they have options. (Moffat’s specific dickishness notwithstanding.) And according to Neil Gaiman, at least one black actor was offered the part, but turned it down. Progress inches along in the background.

On the other hand, he’s apparently the oldest person to be cast in the part since William Hartnell! He really does look like a Classic Who Doctor, too, at least to me. Hopefully it’ll shake up some things we’ve seen in the New Who dynamic, particularly the “hot young romantic hero that all the lovely ladies have to fall for” trope.

A few more stray Who links:

The plans to build yourself a TARDIS cabinet! I want one. No, scratch that, I want lots.

Last night I dreamed my computer was stolen. Was fine the instant I woke up and realized it hadn’t been real, but while it was ongoing it was terrifying. (The thought of so many WIPs lost forever…)

The last time I had a really bad dream was after watching Dollhouse’s “Epitaph One”. Makes sense. Losing your memories and losing things you wouldn’t be able to reconstruct without perfect memory are of a kind :/

And speaking of TV, some things I’ve watched more recently…

Finally managed to kick it.

The episode that did it was the one where Ryder opens up to his teammates about his childhood molestation, and everything about it is badly handled or not resolved or not even addressed, and it just hit me that, wow, this show is never again going to tackle anything in a way I want to watch. Will keep up with canon via the Autostraddle recaps for the sake of reading fic (some of which is actually worthwhile!), and that’s it.

This show is really pretty good.

I enjoyed the BBC’s Sherlock, mostly (and I still haven’t seen The Blind Banker, which probably helps), but Elementary has been offering up a lot less flash for a lot more substance.

Doctor Who

Speaking of flash and no substance! Most of this season has been depressingly thin. Lots of dramatic speeches, very little of the action and effort that makes those speeches earned. Lots of talking up the Great Mystery of What’s Going On With Clara, taking up time that could be used to investigate the mystery, or to develop Clara as a character who’s engaging in her own right beyond being an object of unusual time phenomenon. An episode with a ton of running around in the depths of the TARDIS where we get one or two cool scenes…and then a lot of generic scary being-chased-around-by-monsters.

And then came The Crimson Horror, and it was more fantastic than it had any right to be. Humor! Action! Jenny being fantastic. Strax being adorable. (“Horse! You have failed in your mission!”) A good old-fashioned megalomaniac of a villain. Teamwork! A mystery where the clues came together in meaningful ways, without leaving things hanging to be un-addressed for the next couple of seasons (are we ever going to find out why the TARDIS exploded?). Plus that one poor proper Victorian dude fainting every couple of scenes.

Granted, Clara doesn’t have much to do besides be in trouble, get rescued, and inspire a couple more people to ask about the Great Mystery, but in such a team-heavy episode (with lots of other female characters having significant and well-written interactions, no less), it’s forgivable.

[ETA: No, wait, I completely forgot! Clara did get a moment of awesome. Things needed to be broken, and the Doctor was all “I have my sonic screwdriver!” and Clara was all “yeah, well, I have a chair.” Spoiler alert: the chair worked.]

Can we have a Vastra/Jenny spinoff yet? And can all the episodes be like this? Please?

Game of Thrones

For the most part I have no idea what’s going on in this show. I just watch for a handful of characters being awesome. Particularly Dany.

Black Rock Shooter

I have no idea what’s going on in this show either, but in this case there’s a chance I might actually put it together.

It’s gripping and dramatic and visually stunning, and I’m going to be a solid fan whether it comes together at the end or not. (Though hopefully it will.)

More detailed reviewing here.

Summaries of the unproduced SJA episodes! August 27, 2012

Details taken from the SJA companion magazine, found on Tumblr:

The one where Mr. Smith is put in a human body and flirts with Carla

The one that’s being partially repurposed into a Who episode, featuring Rani Doing Journalism

The one where Sarah Jane is part of (another) ancient prophecy, Jo Grant discovers it via Doing Archaeology, and Sky pulls a Tinkerbell Jesus

Miscellaneous other concepts that never got expanded for production

I really dislike what they were planning for Sky, and will be sticking with the fanon theories for that one. And really, poor Sarah Jane, how many ancient prophecies about her does one woman need? I’m torn about whether I like their idea of a Torchwood crossover, or whether I’m glad that scenario will be left to fic writers. On the plus side, the Mr. Smith thing could have been fun, another callback to Jo would have been awesome, and ACE. WE COULD HAVE HAD ACE.

What does everyone else think?
